Waiheke Island

Located in the Haureke Gulf of New Zealand, about 17.7 km from Auckland, is Waiheke island. It is an amazing place to take a break from the busy city life.

There is car and passenger ferry transport service available that takes people to the island. When on the island, the best way to get around is either by hiring a car, bike or scooters, or better still catch a bus. The population of the island, which is somewhere around 8000 people, will normally increase during the summer as a result of tourists visiting from all over the world. The wine festival, jazz festival, and art festival are held on the island throughout the year and are famous events that attract even more visitors. But there is not really any particular time of the year which is best to visit as Waiheke is good for a visit all around the year.

There is a small populated area on the island, called Lifestylers, where tourists who love to be around nature and live outside the busy city, can stay while visiting the island. The fact that it is surrounded by water has made it a popular place for watersports like kiting, kayaking, boating, and swimming. The white sand beaches are eliciting and make people want to jump into the water all the time. Onatengi Beach and Sandy Beach are the most popular ones for swimming.

Waiheke is home to New Zealand’s best wine. There are at least 30 Vineyards located there, so wine production is one of their specialties. Visitors can take one a wine tasting tour to a winery, that does not only serve wines, but also delicious food. In Oneroa, the largest village on the island, is a host of restaurants and caf├ęs, and an assembly of art galleries and boutiques. This island is simply about art, food, and wine.
